A toolbox talk (also called a tailgate meeting or safety huddle) is a short, informal safety meeting held on the jobsite, usually at the start of a shift. The crew reviews one focused topic - like ladder safety or trenching - relevant to the day’s work. Talks typically take 5-10 minutes and are documented with the date, topic, attendees, and signatures.
Does OSHA require toolbox talks?
OSHA does not mandate toolbox talks at a specific frequency, but 29 CFR 1926.21 requires construction employers to instruct employees in recognizing and avoiding unsafe conditions. Regular, documented toolbox talks are the most widely accepted way to demonstrate that training happened. If an incident occurs or an inspector visits, dated records with signatures are your proof.
