Why it matters
Falls are the number one killer in construction. Protection is required at 6 ft (OSHA) or 3 m (most Canadian provinces) above a lower level.
Key points
- Know your trigger height and when guardrails, nets, or harnesses are required.
- Inspect your harness and lanyard before each shift: webbing, stitching, D-rings, hooks.
- Anchor points must support 5,000 lbs per worker attached.
- Keep the free-fall distance as short as possible; account for lanyard stretch.
- Cover or guard all floor openings - a covered hole must be marked and secured.
