Why it matters
Contact with overhead lines is one of the top causes of electrocution for non-electricians.
Key points
- Minimum 10 ft (3 m) clearance from lines up to 50kV - more for higher voltage.
- Assume every line is live at full voltage.
- Watch booms, ladders, scaffold poles, and dump truck beds near lines.
- If equipment contacts a line: stay in the cab, warn others away, call the utility.
- If you must exit (fire), jump clear and shuffle away - never step wide.
